The Malta Chen Taijiquan Association was formed in 2007 with the aim of promoting the study of the Chen family Style of Taijiquan , sometimes referred to also as Chengiagou (Chen Village) Kungfu, in Malta.  What follows is a short exposition on the health and martial arts attributes of this art which is now well established in Malta and enjoys a regular and steadily increasing following.

Taijiquan (pronounced tai chi chuan) is the best known of the three traditional Chinese “Internal” martial arts. The other two are Bagua Zhang (or Pa Kua) and Xingyi Chu’an (or Hsing yi). All three are designed to be very effective fighting systems. Taijiquan Kungfu is perhaps best known in the Western world as it has received more publicity and attention. Almost any visual feature on China has to include a short clip of middle aged or old people carrying out a ritual of slow synchronised movements in a public park. This is the image of Taiji that we in the West are most familiar with. It is not a deceptive image, but it is incomplete.

E-mail Print PDF

Malta Chen Taijiquan Association certified instructors Richard Galea Debono and Conrad Laus will be attending a Taijiquan Self Defense (TSD) seminar for Instructors organized by the International Taijiquan Kungfu Association (ITKA). The seminar will be held at the ITKA school in Massanunziata (Italy) between the 16th and 18th of December.

TSD System is a very practical self-defense system.  It's characteristics are based on fundamental principles derived from Taijiquan, hence mental awareness, where movements are connected and sensitive.  This simple system is very effective and realistic, and throughout TSD courses participants study various aspects of striking with different parts of the body, exercises to increase sensitivity, position shifting through various movements, simple but effective throwing techniques, ground fighting, locking and choking techniques.   TSD makes practical use of all fundamental martial principles of Chen Family Taijiquan,  hence attacking aggressors with a strong and decisive mind, making use of the whole body, listening of the opponent's force, following the opponent, letting go and being reactive.
